US 9 at IH 84

The IH 84 and US 9 junction south of  Fishkill

New Paltz Toll Plaza

Approaching the toll plaza at New Paltz(JN 18). This is an unusual day, as usually both right lanes are used for EZ-Pass. The flashing yellow lights for the EZ-Pass lanes are LED fixtures.

Exit 125 from Eastbound NY 17

Exit 125 sign

Exit 125 from NY 17(Future IH 86). Not an I-Stanard exit by any stretch of the imagination-since you not only have to make a 90° right to leave the freeway, you have to make another 90° right to get headed toward NY 17M-and South Street is about 2/10 miles west of this sign.  There's more trickiness to this junction, too-There's a side road that leaves to the right, which you can easily miss beacuse your natural tendency is to follow the main line of road, which in this case dumps you onto NY 17 in short order. But you gotta admit, that's a NICE sign-too bad it's nonstandard. NY has this interesting habit of putting some street names in capital letters on freeway signs.

US 9 Freeway In Poughkeepsie

US 9 Freeway In Poughkeepsie

Two shots of US 9 south of the Poughkeepsie Bowtie. Since this is an urban freeway, it's lit, which I wish would be the case in the country, too :P You get a good shot of guardrails here; as well as the "New York " barrier, which is basically a 42" tall wall with a very slight(maybe 15°) slant to it.

US 9W in Highland

Another median treatment that's reasonably popular-The box-girder rail. For medians, the girder is put on top of the posts(as opposed to one side). Quite often, the posts get knocked out from under the girder.

Lane Signals on the Newburg Beacon Bridge

There was a discussion of lane signals on misc.transport.road some time ago; so I grabbed a snap of a set on the Newburgh-Beacon bridge eastbound span. Either span of the bridge could carry-two way traffic, all you'd have to do is change the signals. I have never seen them use the right shoulder, though-the signals for it are always red at any time of day.

US 9W in Ulster Park

And just a plain old bit 'o' road: US 9W in Ulster Park. You can see a bit of box-girder guardrail on the right, follwed by the standard issue type. You get mix and match deals like this all the time. In this area the box-girder railing is used for bridges and is integrated with the bridge rail.
